On our Friday field walk, we noticed a major change to the pirate ship field. Instead of the small plywood bunkers, 20ft fishing boats were buried upright. The larger bunkers felt more in balance with the built-up shipping container and urban fields around it. A new log bunker helped take up some of the space between the boats and urban fields, but the familiar mad dash to the center was still there. Commando’ s signature threestory castles had openings only in the front and one side, which could cause players to be trapped outside on the back. Enter Zac and field owner Randall Wolff, who cut new entrances in a back corner of each castle. The spawns were in new locations at the east and west ends. It was easy to adapt to the changes and there were fewer stalemates and better flow.
This was not my first command and probably my 9th Jedi game. I knew the field well and I was very comfortable with my XO Sebastian Menting( Overkill PB). The Rebel general, Angel Santoyo, was a member of Los Sicarios. I’ ve played alongside and against them many times, and although I wasn’ t going to underestimate them, I knew their style. In June, I had just played a weekend-long game with Rebel XO Orion Rogers, and I’ d played against his team( Battlefield Kings) before. Despite all of this, knowing Zac’ s delightfully volatile approach, I felt less prepared than I’ ve ever been … and that was the point.
