Paintball isn ’ t about big flags and girls in bikinis according to Dirk Gadberry of the OG Ironmen . It isn ’ t meant to be flashy , and that is the appeal of the World Classic Paintball League .
“ We are enjoying a simplified version of the sport ,” Gadberry said , “ And it has really brought a lot of the fun back to what we do .”
On October 14 and 15 , the WCPL Gateway Classic was held at Gateway Paintball in St . Louis , serving as the conclusion to the league ’ s second season , and it was Gadberry ’ s own Ironmen who went home with the championship rings and the first place title for the series .
“ A lot of my guys come from the speedball scene , and they are used to that highintensity , high-demand , highly-competitive atmosphere ,” Gadberry said . “ This is like a breath of fresh air for them . Not sacrificing the competition , but this is just more enjoyable .”
The event was the final in the series of five events for 2023 . Events for this season were held at Panhandle Paintball in Florida , Ambush in Southern California , the legendary PSI in New York , Shooter ’ s All Season in Northern California , this event at Gateway Paintball in St . Louis , and points were counted for the ICC / Montresor Classic in July at Fox Paintball .
Only one team managed to have representation and competed in all five events : The Toxic Teddy ’ s .
