In its eighteenth year , Splatoween returned with its latest installment : The Candyland Massacre . Perhaps its grandest iteration to date , the Gingerbread Mafia with their General Zach Riley waged war against The Gummy Guerillas led by Matt Minarcik in a fantasy land of epic scale .
Multiple games played out simultaneously . First was the battle to control Candy Land with slap sticks in Candy Castle , Cotton Candy Mountain , the Gingerbread Hills , Gumdrop Galleria , Candy Cane Lane , and ( a personal favorite ) Chocolate Alley .
Amidst this relentless battle , a quest for game pieces was underway . Large candies swirls , small candy swirls , giant lollipops , an army of gingerbread men , and candy canes were strewn around the field . In addition , the golden prize pods containing candy and game pieces had to be located to complete the Cand Land Bingo game off-field .
At midday , the XO ’ s engaged in a heated , best-of-three Candyland showdown . The executive officers from each team went toeto-toe to see who had the best Candyland board game skills .
And then , of course , was the tide-changing juggernaut , which came in the form of a life-sized , inflatable gummy bear . The wielder became invincible , and an ideal human shield to advance lines , push forces forward , and secure large areas of the field . The blue team ’ s juggernaut took such a violent assault that it popped .
But shenanigans aside , there is palpable pulse at the core of this event . At its heart is , as always , the players . Many of the participants we spoke with repeated the same sentiment : “ This game is like a homecoming for local players .”
