The Red team, the Vikings, was commanded by Chris Fosnacht who brought his brother from another mother, Johnny“ Bravo” Christian with him as an XO. And the Blue team, the Egyptians, were led by Junior“ Boogyman” Wong of Los Sicarios with the aid of XO Soldiers of Choas’ own Marc“ Dreadnaut” Bellomy.
Not losing sight of this event’ s historic roots and its legacy, CPX Legendary Events produced a playbill, or a program, distributed to every player that contained an event schedule and summary, and a biographical summary of many Hall of Fame inductees of yore. These historical figures were used within some of the game elements, either by name or by accomplishments, in an effort to carry the history of the sport of paintball forward.
CPX successfully managed to combine all of these elements into one, large-scale paintball event through rich storytelling, mythology, puzzles, scavenger hunts, collectibles, and immersive gameplay.
Off the field, producers incorporated more than 220 micro missions available throughout the weekend, and puzzles that had to be completed by players and non-players alike, facilitating more opportunities for players to experience immersion in the story than in years past. This ranged from the young gun missions, to artifact finds, and to mythology quizzes that were high-value, meaning attendees who were not interested in runningand-gunning could still contribute to the event in meaningful ways that contributed significantly to the outcome of the game.
Blue XO Marc“ Dreadnaut” Bellomy said that the off-field components of the game were some of the most challenging parts.
“ We were able to accomplish the missions by [ exploiting ] other clues on the mission cards,” he said, laughing a bit.“ But, we would have been quicker at it if we knew more about Egyptians.”
On field, the battle was intense, balanced, and elicited a constant back-and-forth possession and concession of field control. The game included the traditional push-and-pull elements of slapsticks and prop retrievals, and this year saw the addition of motorized tanks in addition to Hell’ s renowned walking tanks.
“ There were three tanks,” Bellomy said,“ And that really changed the gameplay.”
