And it worked. Commanders were chosen as a mashup up of traditionally German and Allied players from Skirmish games- Allies were led by Matt“ Flintlock” Grubb of the 101st Airborne with XO Jaysin“ Bigfoot” Smith, and the Axis was headed by John Lake of Mayhem Company with XO John“ Sandman” Russell.
The importance of this game cannot be understated. For starters, it provided a platform for Skirmish scenario players to explore parts of the IoN field which they typically do not see. It also created an opportunity for both players and commanders from the highly-entrenched German and Allied teams to work cooperatively, learn from each other, and maybe even network a bit. And finally, it brought some updated scenario game mechanics to Skirmish for the field’ s team to observe which, according to reports, has opened up some conversations for growth and evolution of traditional Skirmish games.
Weather was a challenge for this event. Significant rain delayed arrivals and made for rough terrain all weekend.
According to Matt“ Flintlock” Grubb, the Allied Commander. He came to the game with an advantage, but it wasn’ t in the numbers, it was in experience.
“.. listen, I know that backfield like the back of my hand,” he said.“ And I know how to play it.”
He described Saturday as a very long day given the size and scope of the field, touching on one of the growth opportunities for this game that was noted by Cypher in the overscaled field. But Flintlock saw a positive in what others may not have.
