The Second Incarnation : The Collapse 2
The first episode of the Collapse was played in 2021 at Outdoor Xtreme Chesapeake City , and the sequel that was held on December 3 , 2022 did not disappoint .
For the Cypher production team , the primary objective is creating a fully-immersive experience . Their goal was to conjure a willful suspension of disbelief as soon as the player took the field by doing what they could to make everyone an active part of the story . This was done through the use of accessible and clearly identifiable props and role players .
Propmaster Ryan Galvin said that he wanted to make it easy for players to feel involved in the story .
“ The goal was to make scenario great again ; bring it back ,” Galvin said . “ Make it interactive , immersive . Make the story matter . Get players engaged on the field , not just the command staff in a tent where no one can really see what ’ s happening .”
Props at this game were designed with that engagement in mind . Knowing most players are accustomed to wood blocks and PVC pipe bombs , Cypher went to great lengths to make their props extraordinary . They included an ornate prosthetic hands complete with nails and embedded RFID chips that unlock self-opening cases , simulated radioactive rods which were identified on field using Gieger counters by players wearing Tyvek hazmat suits , and perhaps the highlight for the production staff , was a “ science experiment gone awry ” simulated by two enormous foam machines that literally created a mock-snow storm across the entire property at OXCC .
“ We wanted to make it complicated , but not too complicated . It ’ s challenging , and it should be ,” Galvin said . “ In the heat of the moment [ players ] need to be able to interact with a prop and not necessarily have to solve a puzzle , but they have to think through is it important , how to use it and then make a plan of action .” www . paintball . media
