In past years , the main Allied insertion and access to the back field opened about an hour into the game . This year , apparently in an effort to keep the battle on the beaches , a new rule was initiated specifying that the Allied Insertion would remain closed until three of the five beaches collapsed .
Considering that the vast majority of points in the game are in the back fields , an hour into the game the Allies opted to voluntarily roll up their fronts on the beachheads , sacrificing all of the points there in order to open the main insertion .
Keeping the Allies engaged for additional time on the beaches had allowed the Germans to organize themselves in the back fields . And when the tape at Allied Insertion dropped , the German horde was gathered in force , pinning the Allies at their own base . For more than 2 hours , the Allies threw everything they had at the German forces , but were unable to break their line . By 3:30 in the afternoon , the Allied Command staff finally called no joy , and the game was partially reset .
The remainder of the game proceeded in much the same fashion . It was a slugging match , with both teams in full contact , pounding on each other for two straight days . By Sunday afternoon , an exhausted German command staff were reveling in their accomplishments , setting up lawn chairs on the mounds of the beaches they had defended to watch a lackluster final battle and celebrate a 64 - 23 victory .
