Down at Outdoor Xtreme Battleground in Orlando, Dr. J Productions has built a culture of inclusion and community of players committed to growing the sport they love. Not in the hashtag sense, but in a grassroots, support your neighbor and encourage a rare form of camaraderie. At the center of this culture is an event that is rapidly becoming a tradition to Central Florida and the scenario community at-large known as The Jurassic Game.
To encourage growth and inclusion, producers Dezi and Jenni Johnson have committed to having this game commanded by female ballers. Historically, women have not had the degree of command positions or opportunities that men have, so this game has become a starting point for women to dip their toes into the leadership pool. And the game is architected with this in mind.
As this year’ s Yellow team commander, Cynthia Collins, said,“ It was my first command, and I could not have asked for a better place to do it.”
She openly commended Dezi and Jenni for the constant contact and support that they provided and described the game as simple and straightforward, but still challenging and a heck of a lot of fun. She chose Matt‘ Suicide’ Santos of the East Coast Hunterz to support her as an XO, and the experience he brought paid off.
Friday kicked off with the Heavy Weight Match. A 15 v 15 hyperball game that was played out like human chess as the commanders shouted out positions to the big boys on field. Each player had to stand on a scale to be weighed into the game, which was a spectacle in and of itself. Collins says that was the moment she realized that she should have brought a bullhorn.
The Pink team was led by the more local Lydia Hodge and Emma Johnson. With
