What efforts have you seen to improve the game ?
Sayers : I talk to Terry ( Breslin ) regularly . I mean , I was on vacation with my family , and we were standing in line , and I was on the phone with Terry . We keep an open panel for discussion on how to continually improve the game . Terry has ideas . I believe he wants to make the game better . He wants it to run smooth . He ’ s willing to work with both generals . If ( Skirmish ) wasn ’ t interested in improving the game , there wouldn ’ t be a dialog , but it ’ s a continued conversation .
Following Stalingrad , the staff at Skirmish showed exceptional gratitude for the players ’ efforts and willingness to tolerate the harsh conditions . Every player who stuck it out received two passes to come back for a day of free open play .
Both the Allies and the Germans have seen significant attrition over recent years as major teams are aging and some from neighboring fields no longer attend this , the Spring game , or the Fall game I ’ m October . Yet , according to Skirmish , this has not changed the level of commitment from their dedicated teams . Speaking with Nikki Hurley , Director of Marketing for Skirmish USA , the turn out for this event was exceptionally good , all things considered . Although they did not reach their typical 100-200 walk-on registrations , those players who were pre-registered showed up on force . Hurley reported that the number of no-show registrations was unusually low , and the staff was pleasantly surprised given the frigid conditions .
The committed and dedicated players all say that they come back because of the people , and that these games have become a tradition . So , perhaps we are finding ourselves as witnesses to a social experiment or sorts at Skirmish USA . The question at hand : Is tradition enough to sustain a game ?
Time will tell , but we are watching .
