Classic mechanical Woodsball has been
on a slow and steady incline since Tom
Cole introduced the Ultimate Woodsball
League (UWL) ten years ago. But it was Tim
Montressor’s Iron City Classic (ICC) three
years ago that really got the ball rolling.
And now the International Classic Paintball
League (ICPL), producers of the National
Xball League (NXL), has taken classic
paintball to the league level once again.
Originally scheduled to be a three-event
season, the ICPL’s inaugural season will total
two events—the Windy City Classic and a
finale event in Orlando in October.
ICPL events are played in the woods and on
Hyperball and mounds fields. Players may use
mechanical markers or electronic markers set
at 5.5 balls per second in semiauto or NXL
ramping modes. The ICPL consists of two
divisions: Professional and Amateur. There
are 20 ten-man pro teams in the ICPL, all by
way of an invitation from the league. The ten-
man Amateur division is essentially an open
division for those not playing pro.
Much like the early NPPL (National
Professional Paintball League), game points
are awarded for flag pulls, flag hangs,
eliminating your opponents and for active
players at the end of each game.
The 2019 Windy City Open
Badlandz Paintball in Crete, Illinois was home
to the first event in the ICPL’s history—a
classic venue for the league’s first classic
event. Home to Chicago Aftershock and
many major events during the last 25 years,
Badlandz is a breeding grounds for great
players, teams and events.
