Splat Shots
It wasn’t long ago when paintball
photographers carried a few rolls of Kodiak 36
exposure film to a major paintball tournament
or big game. And as valuable as that was in its
day, shooting 100 photos at a three-day event
didn’t really give photographers a lot of room
for experimentation. Splat shots in the days of
film were extremely rare. Most of the current
and great crop of paintball photographers
shoot several thousand images in a long
weekend of paintball. Adjusting settings on
the fly and experimenting with exposure
lengths, shutter speed and ASA happens all
day long. Even so, the best splat shots are
perfectly timed to catch the ball hitting the
player or object with just the length of open
lens to catch the spray. A thousandth of a
second off and you have just another shot of a
player with paint on his goggles…
