could re-insert right at the castle. The defenders had to
walk down to the valley, and re-insert from there. When
the attackers finally got back to the castle, the defenders
were already there waiting for them.

The biggest problem for the attackers was that on two
sides, they were fighting uphill, on a 40 degree incline or
more, and sometimes as steep as 60 degrees. On the two
sides where it was downhill to the castle, the angle was
much lower – 10-15 degrees – which, while an a dvantage,
was not nearly as big as it could have been.
