International Classic Paintball
Lea gue (by the N X L) Goes
Back To The Future, But…
There’s literally no one involved in tournament paintball today at the management
level that’s been in the game of competitive woodsball longer than the NXL’s
President, Tom Cole. As captain and founder of Bad Company of Maryland in the late
1980s, one of the world’s original professional paintball teams (since the first “pro”
paintball designation in 1992), former President of the National Professional Paintball
League (NPPL), founder of the Ultimate Woodsball League and current President of
the National Xball League (NXL), Tom knows this woodsball thing as well as anyone…
ever. So when the NXL announced its new woodsball league no one at the Paintball.
Media offices were even remotely surprised. Now Tom gets to finished what he started
30 years ago. The question is, will there be enough support for a woodsball league as
opposed to a standalone event?
Prediction: The
NXL’s brain trust is
smart. They understand the game; they
understand the market; they understand
that oversaturation can be an issue; and
they understand there’s an opportunity to
draw in a more diverse player/team base
by expanding to a woodsball series. The
International Classic Paintball League will
choose their locations wisely (dates to be
announced at the end of January), drawing
teams to “classic” and interesting places
and that will kick-start the league nicely.
Our prediction is we’ll see 30-40 teams
in the first two events and 60-plus in the
league’s inaugural season finale.
