Launch of BCF website and campaign to educate public about PaintCare
as part of its paintcare programme , the British coatings Federation
( BcF ) has launched a new website and digital campaign that aims to help the uK public make better use of their leftover paint . on average , each household in the uK has six cans of unwanted paint in their shed or garage . when disposed of , 98 % of this paint ends up in landfill or is incinerated . the website www . paintcare . org . uk centres on three main messages to help get the public involved : buy right , use it up , and recycle the rest . it includes links to paint company calculators to help consumers calculate how much paint they need before they buy . to promote the ‘ buy right ’ message , BcF ’ s digital campaign promotes advice to consumers and features two videos that can be viewed at www . paintcare . org . uk / buy-right or on the BcF ’ s Youtube channel . a new paint recycling locator provided by recycle now in partnership with Valpak allows users to find their nearest household waste recycling centre ( hwrc ) to recycle their unwanted paint .
Finally , the website highlights the ways consumers can ‘ use it up ’ and make use of unwanted paint in other household projects . tom Bowtell , chief executive of the BcF , said : “ with our new website and digital campaign , we ’ re getting the public involved and are encouraging consumers to do what they can now to help make better use of leftover paint . we are hopeful that in time there Tom Bowtell : BCF wants to see a truly will be a truly circular framework circular framework for leftover paint for leftover paint .”
LEFTOVER PAINT POSES PROBLEM FOR LOCAL AUTHORITY RECYCLING
the results of the BcF ’ s 2016 paintcare local authorities survey reveal the barriers to recycling leftover paint as faced by household waste recycling centres ( hwrcs ) across the uK . currently only one in three hwrcs accepts paint in the uK and the survey aimed to understand why the majority are not accepting paint and the challenges faced by those that do . the survey revealed that the majority of paint collected ends up in landfill or is incinerated . however , the remainder is sent to a paint recycler or remanufacturer . the survey reaffirmed previous BcF research that sending paint to a paint recycler or remanufacturer presents a 40 % cost saving to local authorities , due largely to the high cost of incinerating paint as hazardous waste . nearly 30 % of sites that do not collect leftover paint said they were reluctant to take on a paint recycling service due to cost , while 25 % said they do not have enough space . the full report is available at www . paintcare . org . uk / resources .
