My Roots Grow Deep
By Suzanne Quiett
My roots grow deep
Reaching into the fertile soil of my mother
My limbs reach high
Stretching into the deep blue of my father
I inhale your toxins
I exhale your life’s breath
Even bare and naked I am beautiful
Waiting for the icy kiss of winter to warm
But draped in the green clothes of spring
I shade my children from the hot sun’s rays
I inhale your toxins
I exhale your life’s breath
Without me your world would be bare
So many take me for granted
They cut down my siblings without regard
They never notice my existence
I inhale their toxins
I exhale their life’s breath
But forever my roots grow deep
Reaching into the fertile soil that is our mother
