Vertical and horizontal steel
structures
The structures have been made
using modern materials and
technology to integrate the
lost volume measurements of
which nothing remains except
for the memory. Vertical
and horizontal supporting
structures inside the main nave
(western part) are made in
steel replacing the reinforced
concrete that is already being
used for all the anti-seismic
reinforcement of the external
perimetric walls. At the level
of the new ceiling (on the
antique matroneum level) the
presented project does not
modify the primitive form
of the church volumetrically.
The original tripartition of
the western body is actually
maintained and results in
a division into three barrel
vaulted naves: the central one
is 9.1 meters wide and the two
smaller lateral ones are 3.9
and 4.45 meters, respectively.
At the entrance floor of the
church, on the axis of the door
on the right side, two steel
pillars have been built on the
foundation structures already
made. The two new pillars (ca.
8 meters high) have a diameter
of 76 cm and make up the
principle supporting elements
of the new ceiling. The 8
pointed star-shaped plan was
geometrically inspired by the
octagonal plan of the existing
columns. On each of the pillars
(7.18 meters in height) a 9.9
meter beam has been placed.
Each beam is sustained on
three supports: the central
steel pillar, the western façade
wall and the outermost
column at the central drum of
the church reconstructed in
reinforced concrete. The two
beams, besides anchoring and
sustaining the new ceiling, act
as a support for the second
order of steel pillars that
represents the supporting
structure of the roof system.
The ten secondary pillars, with
a cross shape and 7.5 m high,
have a smaller diameter than
those on the ground floor
(only 46 cm) and they have
been lined up, five for part,
along each of the two beams
at continuous distances of
185 cm. They, starting at the
height of +11.95 m, sustain
the two lateral vaults and the
main vault built in reinforced
concrete.
Cover vaults in steel

They have been prepared in a

the metallic centering that
will make up the supporting
framework of the cover. The
two side aisles are covered
by smaller barrel vaults; the
northern small aisle will be
4.45 meters and the southern
side 3.9 meters. They will be
