aging demand and yet comply
with statutory embargoes.
“These compliances are not
easy for the industry, and that
is where the pain point lies.
We believe meeting all the re-
quirements and ticking all the
boxes is as complex as trying
to ‘square a circle’ – the circle
of circular economy. Hence,
the theme of PDIT conference
is ‘Squaring the Circle of Re-
sponsible Packaging.’ During
the conference, we expect to
look at this theme from various
perspectives, from that of the
brand owners’, the regulatory
authorities as well as the inno-
vators and pioneering entre-
preneurs trying to create new
paradigms,” adds Manchanda.
ACTIVE AND INTELLIGENT
PACKAGING MODULE IN PDIT2
CONFERENCE
Active and Intelligent packag-
ing has been added as a unique
concept in the PDIT2 confer-
ence. Through this module,
the conference aims to exam-
ine the emerging role of ac-
tive and intelligent packaging,
which will be showcased by
members of the Active & In-
telligent Packaging Industries
Assoication and offer updates
on topics such as ‘Advances
in NFC Technology for Brand
Experience,’ ‘Potential Role of
Smart Packaging in Indian mar-
ket for Safe Food & Save Food
Campaigns,’ and ‘Future of Ad-
vances in Smart Packaging.’
An understanding of these
topics in the context of the
Indian market is vital for the
future of the industry and
its re-calibration in the con-
text of responsible packaging.
The PDIT2 conference offers
a unique opportunity to learn
about these subjects from in-
ternational experts, who have
flown down to India just for
this purpose.
PDIT2 AWARDS
A unique and never-before as-
pect of the PDIT conference
this time is the segment on
highlighting case studies of ac-
tual packaging developments
by convertors and brand own-
ers. The case studies have been
segmented into three catego-
ries ‒ recognizing Design, In-
novation and Technology. Due
to a spate of entries, a new cat-
egory of packaging for Social
Impact has also been added.
In the case study sessions,
selected case studies will be
presented and judged by an ex-
perienced jury for recognition
and awards in the category of
entry. Convertors stand to ben-
efit by examples of the work
shown in the case studies and
be inspired to participate even
more enthusiastically the next
time around. “In the current
doomsday scenario of climate
change staring us all in the face,
there is now only one message
that the industry needs to get
through this conference. I am
tempted to call it SOS i.e. Save
Our Sustainability. In other
words, there is a sustainability
emergency in the world and
the packaging industry needs
to act responsibly now,” Man-
chanda concludes.
Andrew Manly on the PDIT2 Conference in Delhi
“A
IPIA is looking forward to its participation
at PIDT 2. This is a great opportunity to
catch the huge ‘wave’ of potential business in
the dynamic Indian Packaging Sector and the
huge explosion of interest in disruptive tech-
nologies for better Supply Chain Management,
Brand Protection, Food Safety and Security
and Reduced Food Waste – not to mention Con-
sumer Engagement!
“India is one of the biggest and most
important developing economies with all
the right elements to harness the power of
Smart Packaging. Indian based Brand Owners
are hungry for the latest packaging innovations
to help them reach an expanding and
sophisticated customer base. Already there are
more than 380 million smartphone users in the
country!
“Lets work together to harness that
potential!” – Andrew Manly, Communication
Director of the Active and Intelligent Packaging
Industry Association, based in Amsterdam.

for us,” says Vinod Kakde, head – Technical Sales, Shrinath Ro-
topack.
Apart from supplying flexible packaging to brands based in
India, the company exports packaging materials to a range of
companies in the US, the Middle East and Russia. At pacprocess,
the company promoted its barrier solutions to the FMCG indus-
try and its range of vacuum pouches.
“One has to agree that plastic is the most feasible material for
the packaging industry. There is no alternative to plastic as of now.
Though plastic has received flak from the community recently, it
remains an unmatched option. The broader focus should be on
the recycling front. The industry needs to innovate and come up
with better recycling alternatives than down-cycling,” explains
Kakde. Shrinath currently recycles its in-house waste to granules/
pellets that can be used for secondary applications. The company
has been doing in-house recycling for more than six years.
Kakde continues, “We haven’t yet been able to meet a signifi-
cant number of brand owners since it is just the first day. We hope
more brands come to the show in the days to follow.” He added
that the recent slowdown in the industry has affected the com-
pany’s business. Nevertheless, he hopes that the situation will
improve in the near future. “Steps to overcome the slowdown are
taken by the higher management, and they’re currently working
on it. However, the situation doesn’t seem that bad. I think this is
just a phase and it will pass. The industry has seen ups and downs
in the past as well,” Kakde shares.
Currently, Shrinath is aiming to increase its exports to Euro-
pean countries. “We’re a little behind in Europe, but it is a prom-
ising market, and that is our primary target as of now. In India,
we’re working with ITC, Nestle, and Britannia, amongst others,”
he shares. Kakde says that the current financial year has been
relatively good for the company, and with the agenda for growth
in exports in place right now, the company is hopeful to end the
year on a high note.
