It ' s hard to believe that Russia will still be using horses in this modern war . Yet as late as World War II , Russia ' s cavalry met and defeated some of the more modern German forces . The invading army will have to travel through some very tough terrain . Horses are still the quickest and safest means of transporting troops , light artillery and field equipment over mountainous terrain . As we know , the land between Russia and Israel is extremely mountainous .
