COLLINS COTTAGE

BLACKBAND DESIGN
Greg and Wendy Blackband , the owners of Blackband Design in Costa Mesa , worked together with designer Ashley Porter to create the interior of Collins Cottage , which is the largest cottage in terms of square footage and includes both a full-size elevator and an octagon-shaped rooftop lounge for entertaining . It was important to the designers to include popular Newport design elements such as shiplap , white walls , wood tones and washed brick to stay true to the local scene . The team then layered in playful , unexpected elements in the fabrics and pillows , as well as a yellow door and local art to complete the look of the eclectic coastal cottage design .
“ The concept of Lido House was to bring an East Coast , Cape Cod vibe to Newport Beach . So , from the beginning , we really wanted to meld the classic East Coast style with the California coastal feel in our cottage ,” says Wendy Blackband , who grew up on Balboa Island . “ We went for a more sophisticated and even glam style of furnishings with tailored , upholstered details versus casual slipcovers , and sleek wood

A custom , dark wood-channeled dining table base with brass inlays and white quartz marble top is showcased in the dining room . The green color and tailored details of the velvet loveseat in the master bedroom creates a pop of brilliant color against the whites and blues in the room .
Tile variations are found throughout the cottage and its bathrooms : hand-stamped tiles were used on the stair risers , hand-painted tiles in powder bathroom and a mix of tiles in the master bathroom . The “ Stay Awhile ” sign on the faux plant wall of the rooftop deck acts as a billboard and photo backdrop for guests to enjoy and do just as it says .
“ Overall , in our cottage and our designs in general , you ’ ll notice that not everything matches , but there ’ s a cohesive theme throughout ,” Wendy Blackband explains , adding that the goal is to achieve balance . “ We believe this brings more depth and personality to a space .”

ERICA BRYEN DESIGN
For Erica Bryen , working on a
Lido House cottage was a rare opportunity
to be involved with a hotel as her
team at Newport-based Erica Bryen Design
usually focuses on residential projects . And
working on a hotel in the city where she grew
up — along with other designers from the area —
was a special treat for Bryen .
“ It was unique that Bob [ Olson of R . D . Olson Development ] had the villas designed by different designers , so that made it fun ,” Bryen says . “ That is something I haven ’ t seen done before .” The inspiration for the Linda Cottage was “ Hamptons-meets-Newport-Beach .” To fit that bill , ocean-toned wallpapers were installed to make each guest feel like they were at the

“ They wanted the design to be modern , ‘ Hamptons Beach ,’ so we put our own modern twist on it ,” Bryen says . “ There were instructions to make it comfortable and make people feel like they were in the Hamptons with a beach vibe . Since I grew up here , it was an easy task for us .”
