Cursing is an integrated, interesting part of every country’s language and culture. It’s interesting to elaborate
how curses (especially the ones that include swear
words) differ from culture to culture, and how people
from different backgrounds choose to curse.
In a very simple research conducted via social media,
through a poll with two simple questions, we managed
to receive answers about Albanians’ worst curse, as
well as the most favorite. The poll suggested that, in
Albania, the worst thing you can say to someone is “Te
qifsha motren” which could be translated as “Fuck your
sister”. The root of this fact can be traced back in
time, and deep into the Albanian mentality.
The fact that Albania has been a country with
a variety of conquerors in different periods of
time, it was only logical that in order to ensure social sustainability, the society had to
develop its own rules and guidelines for living (or surviving), which would exist and be
respected regardless of the suppressor or
the period. The basis of these regulations
that existed especially in isolated areas of
Albania was the family, and most importantly, the moral of the family. In some sort
of regulations, mostly in the north, firing
a woman from the house (or in extreme
cases even murder) was legit, because it
served the greater good of protecting the
moral integrity of the family. This is why, I
believe, the worst insult in Albania is “fuck your
sister”, because a fucked sister in Albania means a
family without honor, and as a result of the heritage
from (relatively) medieval regulations, that is the biggest insult to an Albanian. Another evidence that supports this claim is the fact that the second most voted
curse as “The worst curse in Albanian” was “Te qifsha
robt” which means “Fuck
