PA FIRE APPARATUS & QUARTERS Jan.2014 | Page 2

Philadelphia is full of history, one thing that did not make the history books was a firehouse specifically built to protect a Sears mail order facility. The Sears Company built a large mail order facility in 1920 in Northeast Philadelphia. The complex became a small town within it's self including it's own power plant and firehouse. This station was built within feet of the building.

The Sears company closed this facility in 1993 and the station is now the property of the Philadelphia Fd which continues to operate an engine and a chief's buggy from these quarters to protect the vast growing community.

Inside the station, you quickly notice the tradition of an old fire house. The ceiling in the apparatrus bay for instance , is skillfully designed vs. a drop ceiling. The watch desk is another example, desingned for one person with just enough room for a TV and radio. As you walk through this old station you walk into the kitchen area that doubles as the social area. In here you have the basics a station kitchen would have a stove, sink, and table. The only thing out of sorts would be the large flat screen.
