NET ZERO EMISSION BUILDING OPERATION IS ON THE CUSP OF GOING MAINSTREAM BY 2030
KENT PETERSON
Building owners and developers are beginning to recognize the value of sustainable building practices with technological advances , cost reductions , and increased public awareness of climate change . Building decarbonization solutions are gaining momentum . Net Zero emission building operation is on the cusp of going mainstream by 2030 .
One significant driver of the shift toward Net Zero building operation is recognizing a building ’ s impact on the environment . Buildings consume 40 % of the world ’ s energy and produce 30 % of global greenhouse gas emissions . As a result , governments and businesses alike are setting ambitious sustainability targets . Many cities and states have implemented regulations requiring buildings to meet Net Zero energy standards or reduce carbon emissions . owners and operators to identify inefficiencies and implement targeted energy-saving measures .
We are optimistic as the ‘‘ Getting to Zero Forum ’’ approaches in May in Minneapolis . Industry professionals , government officials , and key stakeholders will come together to discuss and generate ideas for creating a decarbonized future for the built environment . By 2030 , Net Zero emission new building construction will be the standard , and those who fail to adopt sustainable practices will be left behind .
Additionally , the cost of renewable energy technology , such as solar panels and wind turbines , continues to decrease . According to the International Renewable Energy Agency ( IRENA ), solar photovoltaic module costs have declined by more than 80 % since 2010 . As renewable energy costs continue to fall , it will become increasingly cost-effective for building owners to produce their energy , reducing their reliance on fossil fuels and decreasing their carbon footprint .
Net Zero building operation has become a competitive advantage for building owners and developers . Businesses are recognizing the value of sustainable buildings in attracting tenants and employees who prioritize environmentally conscious practices . Additionally , studies show that sustainable buildings have higher resale values , lower operating costs , and better tenant retention rates .
Lastly , technological advances and the Internet of Things ( IoT ) are making Net Zero building operations more accessible than ever . Building automation systems , sensors , and smart thermostats can optimize energy usage , improving building performance and reducing energy waste . These systems provide realtime data on energy consumption , enabling building
