Securing Life & Property

Fire safety systems and equipment are as varied as the facilities that need them . Often , fire suppression needs stretch beyond the standard water-based automatic sprinkler system , including gaseous agent systems as an alternative for water-sensitive assets or foam systems for higher-challenge hydrocarbon fires . Heat , smoke and carbon monoxide detectors , alarms and PA systems provide early warning to occupants and first responders . Emergency lighting and illuminated signage help occupants to safely evacuate from buildings .
However , fire protection encompasses more than building occupants might realize . Beyond the self-evident equipment to warn about and put out fires , there are lesser-known elements of fire safety at buildings . These functions tie into building design , fire codes , construction processes and materials . Hazard analysis identifies problem areas where fires are more likely to occur . Performance inspections make sure new systems operate as intended and existing systems are still fit for purpose . Installation of fire-rated walls , doors and flooring helps buildings temporarily resist the spread of fire . Similarly , smoke barriers resist the movement of smoke through a building . Fire safety systems can also interact with other systems like building automation systems , electrical systems , HVAC systems and more to provide additional layers of detection and prevention . These systems are known as passive fire protection and help provide additional time for the building occupants to reach safe areas .
Education and training are as important as precautions and protection systems . Actions from occupants or facilities personnel could render equipment less effective or inoperable . Proper knowledge of fire safety basics and a particular understanding of a building ’ s fire safety systems , equipment and processes will help protect life and property by lowering the risk of fire outbreaks and ensuring that proper responses , like evacuation protocols , are followed in the event a fire occurs .
The staff in our Fire Protection Studio have the specialized training and hands-on experience to assist building owners and design professionals in handling all the fire safety issues just discussed . We help clients with comprehensive fire protection design for new buildings and renovations . We review fire plans for single buildings , campuses , cities , and counties . We retrofit existing buildings with updated fire safety systems . We inspect and specify maintenance and repairs for systems that may not be up to code .
