Hunting Quarter Road impassable for many vehicles. A creek runs through a section that was washed out over the winter and the road has never fully dried out. Pick-ups and all-wheel-drive vehicles can navigate the terrain, but cars are best suited to enter from the sec- ond entrance to the road, located directly opposite Hughes Road on River Road. That section is paved for the first few hundred yards and is easily traversable to the Hughes Hollow parking area. There, outdoor enthusiasts can walk the trail that goes between two marshes and onwards towards the towpath on the C&O Canal and the Potomac River. There are other trails that lead around the marshes and through nearby woodlands Busy beavers have their way in the streams and marshes of McKee-Besher WMA. and fields where wildlife and birds are bountiful. Although bears are not commonplace, they are occa- sionally seen passing through. DNR officials believe it is only a matter of time before bears begin to make their dens in the remote areas, so a little healthy precaution is war- ranted when hiking the trails. To learn more about McKee- Besher’s WMA, visit their webpage: http://dnr.maryland.gov/wildlife/ Pages/publiclands/central/mck- eebeshers.aspx or take a drive through our most rural environs in the Agricultural Reserve and take a step back in time to see what the county once looked like before de- velopment changed our footprint upon the wild landscape. 9 BEST DAYS OF SUMMER!
