News & Views Winter 2013 Ray Dupont, National Stores Committee Chairperson S ice erv As I reflect on the theme for this issue of the Ozanam News, the service offered by the stores to people is a very worthy gift. It occurs to me that the volunteers may be more attuned to this aspect as they are giving freely of their time and are working for the love of the store and Society. The employee may sometimes become complacent and view this simply as a job. It is therefore critical that management instill the attitude of service to, and love of the poor, particularly by example, into all the employees and volunteers in the store. We were privileged to attend the annual gathering in Madison and the store visits and workshops. We observed the above theme in action while meeting the personnel at the stores. One of the many observations is that the management of the stores were mostly young people and very much associated with the culture of the times. We were delighted to see how they are using social media to improve the operations and attracting more customers in the stores. You could also see that their enthusiasm spread throughout the other employees and their entire operations. A Gift Worth Unwrapping Every Day couple of the innovative ideas that we saw were the distribution of air mattress to clients. Bedding is a constant problem for the people we serve and giving used mattresses is not an option.
