M
urmurations and
ancient monuments
have been occupying
the thoughts of Guild
vice president Roly Smith
over the past few weeks. They
were the subjects of major
feature articles by Roly in
BBC Countyfile magazine.
The murmurations are the
spectacular gatherings
of starlings seen at dusk
at various sites around
Britain in winter; and the
ancient monuments were
hillforts – those enigmatic
earthworks which encircle
so many of the summits of
our British hills, and which
have fascinated Roly for many
years. Still on the subject of
archaeology, the latest edition
of ACID (Archaeology and
Conservation in Derbyshire)
which Roly edits was
published this month, and
as a result of Roly’s recently-
reprinted book, Clarion Call, a
new exhibition of the life and
work of GHB Ward is being
planned for the Weston Park
Museum in Sheffield.
