FROM THE PRESIDENT
2019-20 SEASON
HOLST
THE PLANETS
T
here is a shared sense of grati-
tude across our organization
for our community’s steadfast
commitment to the Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra. Your attendance, advocacy,
and support foster an ensemble that is one
of Maryland’s greatest cultural assets.
As the only orchestra in the country to have
homes in two different metropolitan areas
throughout each season, we are excited to
celebrate the 15 th anniversary of The Music
Center at Strathmore. Our community in
Montgomery County is a vital part of the
BSO family, and our strong partnership
with Strathmore helps the BSO enrich the lives of thousands of music lovers.

Our presence in Montgomery County includes BSO’s OrchLab program, which
supplements the instrumental music curriculum in partnership with Montgomery
County Public Schools by bringing BSO musicians into classrooms. In addition, our
popular Music Box series for children has recently expanded to include performances at
AMP by Strathmore in Bethesda, building on ongoing performances for young people
at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, the Peggy and Yale Gordon
Center for Performing Arts in Baltimore County, and other venues.

Edward Maclary, director In March 2020, the BSO will participate in SHIFT: A Festival of American Orchestras
at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. This prestigious festival is
presented by the Kennedy Center and Washington Performing Arts. We will bring
a number of our community engagement activities to D.C., including some of our
outstanding education programs. You will not want to miss the BSO’s performance in
the Concert Hall at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday, March 25. We hope you’ll join
us for this remarkable performance led by Music Director Marin Alsop celebrating the
changing faces of America.
Celebrate the 30th anniversary
of the Hubble Telescope with
performances of Holst’s
The Planets, complete with
Hubble photos and a special
guest from NASA. As we strive, together, to expand the reach of our great orchestra and invite more
people into the BSO family, we rely on your generosity and support. If you speak with
people who want to know how they can be part of the story now, please tell them how
simple it is to get involved. Attending concerts and giving to the Annual Fund make a
tremendous difference. This is a pivotal moment for your Orchestra, and the important
work underway will affect the trajectory of the BSO for years to come.
