About the Concert
EIN HELDENLEBEN
Richard Strauss
Born in Munich, Germany, June 11, 1864;
died in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany,
September 8, 1949

to portray himself as the hero in his
eighth tone poem, Ein Heldenleben (“A
Hero’s Life”), written in 1897–98? If so,

work an outrageous display of musical
megalomania. That it is one of the most
stunning, viscerally exciting display pieces
