He earned a bachelor’s degree in Music from Stanford University and a master’s degree in Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. In 2011 and 2012, he was a Conducting Fellow with the Academy of Conducting in Aspen and has participated in master classes with Bernard Haitink and Michael Tilson Thomas. Hersh is a two-time recipient of the Solti Foundation Career Assistance Award. Hersh has had frequent arrangement commissions from the BSO as well as from the Cleveland Pops, the National Repertory Orchestra and the Jackson Symphony. His symphonic arrangement of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” saw worldwide success as a viral YouTube hit. PRESENTING SPONSORS: About the Artists Nicholas Hersh Nicholas Hersh is Associate Conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and Artistic Director of the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras. Since joining the BSO as Assistant Conductor in 2014, he continues to make his mark on the mid-Atlantic region with innovative programming, notably as conductor and co-curator of the acclaimed BSO Pulse series, bringing together indie bands and orchestral musicians in unique collaborations. Hersh directs the BSO’s educational and family programming, including the celebrated Academy for adult, amateur musicians, as well as a variety of classical and popular programs. Hersh made his BSO subscription debut stepping in for an indisposed Yan Pascal Tortelier and has since conducted the BSO in a set of subscription concerts each season. In the 2018–19 season, Hersh makes his debut with the National Symphony Orchestra and the Phoenix Symphony. He has appeared with the New World, Houston, Southern Great Lakes and North Carolina symphony orchestras. Hersh is a frequent collaborator and guest faculty at the Peabody Conservatory as well as the BSO’s OrchKids program for Baltimore City schoolchildren. Hersh Since winning the Cello First Prize and Gold Medal at the XIV International Tchaikovsky Competition at the age of 22, Narek Hakhnazaryan has performed with major orchestras across the globe and has established himself as one of the finest cellists of his generation. The Strad has described him as “dazzlingly brilliant” and the San Francisco Chronicle hailed his performing as “nothing short of magnificent.” In 2014 he was named a BBC New Generation Artist and in 2016 he made his highly distinguished and critically acclaimed BBC Proms debut. In the 2018-19 season, Hakhnazaryan performs with the Vienna, Helsinki, NHK and Western Australia symphony orchestras; the Royal Stockholm and Taiwan philharmonic orchestras; and the Munich Chamber Orchestra. He has performed with the BBC Philharmonic; the Baltimore, New Zealand, Detroit, Milwaukee, Toronto, Sydney and Moscow symphony orchestras; the Royal Liverpool, Royal Stockholm, Netherlands, Essen, JA N – F E B 201 9 / OV E R T U R E 31
