Beamish’ s“ City Stanzas” at the BBC Philharmonic and the Paris and Swedish chamber orchestras, highlighting Biss’ commitment to building the repertoire. In the final two years of the project, he premieres concertos by Caroline Shaw and Brett Dean.
Biss has embarked on a nineyear recording cycle of Beethoven’ s complete piano sonatas. Of the fourth volume, BBC Music Magazine said,“ Jonathan Biss will surely take his place among the greats if he continues on this exalted plane.” His bestselling eBook, Beethoven’ s Shadow, was the first Kindle Single written by a classical musician, and he continues to lecture on Beethoven’ s Piano Sonatas.
Throughout his career, Biss has advocated for new music. He has commissioned works by David Ludwig, Leon Kirchner, Lewis Spratlan and Bernard Rands, and he has premiered a piano quintet by William Bolcom.
Biss comes from a family of musicians that includes his grandmother, cellist Raya Garbousova( for whom Samuel Barber composed his Cello Concerto), and his parents, violinist Miriam Fried and violist / violinist Paul Biss. Biss began his piano studies at age six. He later studied at Indiana University with Evelyne Brancart and with Leon Fleisher at the Curtis Institute of Music. At 20, Biss made his New York recital debut at the 92 nd Street Y and his New York Philharmonic debut under Kurt Masur. Biss has been recognized with the Leonard Bernstein Award, Wolf Trap’ s Shouse Debut Artist Award, Lincoln Center’ s Martin E. Segal Award, an Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 2002 Gilmore Young Artist Award. His recent albums for EMI won Diapason d’ Or de l’ année and Edison awards. He was an artist-in-residence on American Public Media’ s Performance Today and was the first American chosen to participate in the BBC’ s New Generation Artist program.
Jonathan Biss last appeared with the BSO in June 2012, performing Beethoven ' s Third Piano Concerto, Günther Herbig, conductor.
