About the Concert THE HEBRIDES OVERTURE Felix Mendelssohn Born in Hamburg, Germany, February 3, 1809; died in, Leipzig, Germany, November 4, 1847 The overture known both as “Fingal’s Cave” and “Hebrides” is a miniature tone poem that memorializes the young Felix Mendelssohn’s visit to the Hebrides Islands off the northwest coast of Scotland in August 1829— and specifically, a turbulent sea journey to view the dramatic basalt formation known as Fingal’s Cave. Just 20 years old, Mendelssohn had embarked earlier that year on a grand tour of Europe that provided the final educational and cultural polish for wealthy young men of the period. After conquering England with his musical talent and fluent English, he ventured north to Scotland in the company of his friend Karl Klingemann. The seas on the way to Fingal’s Cave were rough and windswept. Mendelssohn SWAN LAKE RUSSIAN GRAND BALLET PRESENTS WED OCT 4 7:30PM THU OCT 5 7:30PM THE MODELL LYRIC RACHEL M.
