inal boarding call for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart!
On September 7, Marin Alsop and musicians of
the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra headed to
Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood
Marshall Airport to surprise passengers and passers-
by with an impromptu pop-up concert. As an added bonus, this
special “Conduct Me” event allowed individuals in the terminal
to take turns directing the Orchestra. Performing Mozart’s
Marriage of Figaro Overture, Alsop led the BSO through the
work before turning the baton over to the crowd.
Guests of all ages took an opportunity to conduct the BSO,
while Alsop looked on and offered some much-appreciated
guidance. Though some had backgrounds as instrumentalists,
most were classical music first-timers. Students, a police officer
and even a pilot all took turns trying to prove that they could be
the next Marin Alsop.
One participant who was visiting Baltimore for the weekend
from Louisville relished her time on the podium. “We have a great
orchestra with a rich history in Louisville,” she noted, “and it’s so
exciting to see the symphony here in Baltimore
