100 YEARS of Bernstein Marin Alsop and the BSO celebrate the legacy of one of music’s greatest icons W hen it comes to influential figures in 20 th -century American music, it doesn’t get much bigger than Leonard Bernstein. Not only a composer and conductor, but also a deeply committed educator and humanitarian, Bernstein’s name connotes the same legendary status 8 OV E R T U R E / BSOmusic.org associated with other giants of classical music like Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. Across the country and around the world, celebrations are underway to honor the man who left this indelible mark on the music world. Born on August 25, 1918, Bernstein would have celebrated his 100 th birthday this year, and orchestras, festivals and artists from Boston to Budapest are paying tribute. BY DEVON MALONEY
