BSO and BMA join forces
for “Impressionist Masterworks”
A
rtistic periods come and go over time, as do the
characteristics that define them. Large movements
like Classicism or Romanticism can shape the
trajectory of artwork for decades or even centuries, but the
ways in which the various elements of those styles manifest
in different mediums isn’t always consistent.
Central to the BSO’s current season is the examination
of how music interacts with and is affected by other artistic
disciplines like literature, visual art and dance. As part of
this project, the BSO partnered closely with the Baltimore
Museum of Art to develop January’s “Impressionist
Masterworks” concerts, part of the Off The Cuff series.
In these performances, Music Director Marin Alsop and
the BSO explore the influence that visual art had on Debussy
and Ravel. They consider how elements of Impressionistic
painting like brush stroke and color translated to music
through choices in orchestration and articulation.

TREASURE TROVE
Library of Congress lends artifacts
for illuminating displays
I
n another exciting collaboration this season,
the BSO is working with the Library of
Congress in Washington, D.C. to develop
curated lobby displays for a select number of
concerts during the winter and spring. These
“treasure displays” will feature exhibits of
artifacts, manuscripts and memorabilia from the
Library’s archives that will be shown at the Joseph
Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and The Music Center
at Strathmore.
“It’s been fascinating to explore the
resources of the Library of Congress,” says
Carole Wysocki, the BSO’s Director of
Education and Community Engagement.

PETER KJOME JOINS
BOARD OF CLEVELAND
INSTITUTE OF MUSIC
A
t its annual meeting last fall, the
Cleveland Institute of Music
announced that BSO President
& CEO Peter T. Kjome had been named
to an ex-officio position on the Institute’s
Board of Directors. In this capacity, Kjome,
himself having graduated with his Bachelor
of Music degree from the prestigious music
conservatory, represents CIM alumni.
“I’m honored to be joining this
distinguished grou p of leaders in
representing my alma mater,” says
Kjome. “It is a privilege to be able to
work on behalf of the Institute and
to help support its advancement of
music education.”
