Branford
Marsalis
From early acclaim as
a saxophonist bringing
new audiences to jazz,
Branford Marsalis has
expanded his horizons as a musician,
composer, bandleader and educator.
Growing up in New Orleans as the
son of pianist Ellis Marsalis, Branford
Marsalis was drawn to music along
with siblings Wynton, Delfeayo and
Jason. Playing clarinet gave way to the
alto and then the tenor and soprano
saxophones. He worked with Clark Terry
and alongside Wynton in Art Blakey’s
Jazz Messengers before leaving to join
the Wynton Marsalis Quintet. Marsalis
formed his own quartet in 1986. Known
for its interpersonal communication,
extensive book of original music and
an unrivaled spirit in performances, the
Branford Marsalis Quartet has long been
recognized as the standard of its kind.
Marsalis is increasingly sought-after as
a soloist with classical ensembles including
the Chicago, Detroit and Düsseldorf
symphony orchestras and the Boston Pops,
with a repertoire that includes Debussy,
Mahler, Rorem and Vaughn Williams.
Under the direction of Gil Jardim, Marsalis
and members of the Philharmonia
Brasileira toured the U.S. in 2008,
performing works by Heitor Villa-Lobos,
commemorating the 50 th Anniversary of
the Brazilian composer’s death.
Making his first appearance with the
New York Philharmonic in the summer
of 2010, Marsalis was invited back in the
2010 –2011 season, bringing “a gracious
poise and supple tone … and an insouciant
swagger” (The New York Times).
Marsalis joined the celebrated Chamber
Orchestra of Philadelphia on tour in
2014, performing masterpieces by Bach,
Handel, Vivaldi and others. He also
performed John Adams’ Saxophone
Concerto with the Tokyo Metropolitan
Symphony Orchestra in 2015.
