Jonathan Carney

Concertmaster Jonathan Carney is
in his 16 th season with the Baltimore
Symphony Orchestra, after 12 seasons
in the same position with London’s Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra. Mr. Carney is a
graduate of The Juilliard School and was
awarded a Leverhulme Fellowship to continue his studies in London
at the Royal College of Music.
Mr. Carney was appointed concertmaster of the Bournemouth
Symphony Orchestra in 1994 and the Basque National Orchestra
in 1996. Recent solo performances have included Vaughan
Williams’ The Lark Ascending, which was featured as a live BBC
broadcast from London’s Barbican Hall. His recordings include
concertos by Mozart, Vivaldi and Nielsen; sonatas by Brahms,
Beethoven and Franck; and a disc of virtuoso works of by Sarasate
and Kreisler with his mother Gloria Carney as pianist.
Mr. Carney currently serves as Artistic Director for the
Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras and is an artist-in-residence
at the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he serves on the
Board of Directors.
Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith joined the Baltimore
Symphony Orchestra in September
2015. Mr. Smith earned his Bachelor
of Music degree as a student of Julia
Bushkova at the University of North Texas
and a Master of Music at the Cleveland
Institute of Music in the studio of Stephen Rose.
Mr. Smith frequently plays with his BSO colleagues in chamber
concerts including the Community Concerts at Second, the
Sundays at Three series and abroad at the Silk Road International
Art Festival in Xi’an, China. He was previously a member of the
Akron and Canton Symphony Orchestras, guest concertmaster
for the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and has performed
with The Cleveland Orchestra.

Currently acting associate concertmaster,
Wyatt Underhill joined the BSO as
assistant concertmaster in 2016. He has
performed as a soloist with the Milwaukee
Symphony Orchestra, the Concord
Chamber Orchestra and the Oberlin
Orchestra, and in recital at the Kennedy Center and the Gualala
Arts Center in California. He has been concertmaster of the Juilliard
Orchestra and the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and toured
China and Singapore as concertmaster of the Oberlin Orchestra.
As a Baroque violinist, Mr. Underhill has performed with Apollo’s
Fire (The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra), Juilliard415 and as a soloist
with the Oberlin Baroque Orchestra.
Boram Kang

Boram Kang joined the BSO in Septem-
ber 2015. She graduated from the East-
man School of Music with a bachelor’s
degree in music, received her master’s
degree from the Cleveland Institute of
Music and completed the Performance
Residency Program at Carnegie Mellon University.
Ms. Kang was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Festival during
the summer of 2006 and a member of Pacific Music Festival in
Sapporo, Japan in 2001, 2002 and 2005. Before joining the
BSO, she was an interim assistant concertmaster of the Louisville
Orchestra in 2012 and a fixed fourth chair of the Colorado
Symphony from 2013 to 2015.
Qing Li
violin
Qing Li is the BSO principal second
violin and is frequently featured as a
soloist. She is a violin faculty artist at the
Peabody Conservatory, a Piatigorsky
Foundation artist and much sought-
after recitalist, chamber musician
and guest concertmaster. She is on the Faculty Artist team of
NYO-China, a Carnegie Hall project.
Ms. Li has collaborated with world-class soloists including Hilary
Hahn. She was the associate concertmaster at the Eastern Music
Festival and a faculty member for EMF and the Beijing International
Music festival. She has taught masterclasses in Asia’s major
conservatories and at the Festival Internacional de Inverno Compos
do Jordão Winter Festival in Brazil.
