Throughout history,
artists have taken inspiration from and
collaborated with other artists to break
through genres. Think of Picasso’s Three
Musicians — a master work born of
the painter’s set designs for Stravinsky’s
Pulcinella — or James McNeill Whistler’s
Nocturne paintings, inspired by Chopin.
“Various disciplines of art have had
many crossing points,” says Marin Alsop,
BSO Music Director. “Composers are
inspired by stories they’ve heard or pieces
of art they’ve seen. Many works throughout
history wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for
inspiration from another art form.”
The BSO’s 2017–2018 season celebrates
the ways music and other artistic genres
— specifically literature, art and dance
— intertwine. The season will take you
on a stroll through an art gallery with
Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition;
you’ll meet the Prince of Denmark
in Tchaikovsky’s Hamlet Fantasy-
Overture; and Bernstein’s On the Town:
Three Dance Episodes will get your
feet tapping.
Divided into three themes, the
season opens with Literature, which
coincides with the Baltimore Book
Festival. Repertoire includes Don Juan
and Don Quixote by Richard Strauss on
separate programs, Mendelssohn’s
A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture,
Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a
Faun and Elgar’s Falstaff. Principal Guest
Conductor Markus Stenz will lead an
Off The Cuff with selections from
Wagner’s Parsifal, the story of a knight
in search of the Holy Grail.
The Arts begins in early January and
Dance will take flight on April 6 with a
program that includes Rachmaninoff’s
Symphonic Dances.
