Welcome to this Baltimore Symphony Orchestra concert . It is a privilege to serve as president of our extraordinary orchestra , and I appreciate the warm welcome extended by numerous people in our community .
As we begin the BSO ’ s second century , many of us have been reflecting on what it means to have an orchestra of international stature . The BSO is a vital community treasure that has a tremendous impact both on and off the stage , and the orchestra plays an important role promoting our region as a leading cultural center across the country and beyond .
Thanks to the visionary and steadfast support of community leaders , today the BSO is the largest cultural organization in Maryland , reaching more than 350,000 people each year . Our remarkable Music Director Marin Alsop , superb BSO musicians and the guest artists who perform with the orchestra enrich our lives through exceptional artistry . The orchestra ’ s programs include not only concerts , but also educational opportunities serving thousands of young people from our diverse community .
