morning serenade, which returns at midpoint and, faster still, to conclude the piece. Between the Alborada’ s appearances comes a slow, songful interlude reveling in the orchestra’ s richest colors led by the horns. The fourth-place“ Canto gitano” or“ Gypsy Song” is introduced by a brass fanfare; under its impassioned melody, the whole orchestra vibrates like a giant guitar. This flows directly into the final“ Fandango,” a blazing gypsy dance with castanets and drums.

Born of humble origins in the dead-end cotton mill town of Oldham, Lancashire, William Walton, a fine child singer, escaped a life of factory drudgery via a scholarship to Oxford’ s Christ Church Cathedral School, and went on to undergraduate studies at the University. Adopted by the wealthy, bohemian Sitwell family, he achieved notoriety as one of England’ s rising young musical talents at age 20 with Façade, his chamber music setting of Edith Sitwell’ s eccentric poetry. His best works were written before he was 40: a superb Viola Concerto( 1928 – 1929), the spectacular oratorio Belshazzar’ s Feast( 1930 – 1931), his First Symphony( 1931 – 1935) and the Violin Concerto( 1938 – 1939).
Although he longed to win musical immortality through“ serious” compositions, Walton was one of the first major composers to turn to the movies. The most famous of his many film scores were for Laurence Olivier’ s Shakespeare trilogy— Henry V, Hamlet and Richard III— and they earned him a lot of money.
