Welcome to the 101 st year of this great orchestra! As our centennial celebration comes to a close, I wish to congratulate Marin Alsop on her tenth year as Music Director. Her presence has been transformational— her talent for programming, vision for OrchKids and embrace of our audience have become hallmarks of the BSO. Congratulations also to the extraordinarily
I wish to congratulate Marin Alsop on her tenth year as Music Director. talented musicians of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, whose artistry is paralleled by the dedicated behind-the-scenes staff. Thank you for an incredible year of music— a year that included legendary symphonic works and world premieres by exceptional living composers.
As the BSO performs the first notes in our next century, I am proud to welcome eight new Baltimore Symphony Orchestra musicians to our esteemed stage: Matthew Barker, Fourth / Utility Trumpet; Holly Jenkins, Section Second Violin; Se-Doo Park, Section Cello; Sunjoo Park, Section Second Violin; Jacob Shack, Fourth Chair Viola; Lukasz Szyrner, Section Cello; Audrey Wright, Fourth Chair Second Violin; and Yao Zhai, Principal Clarinet. Do give them a warm welcome.
Together under one baton, we will conclude our celebration with the soaring sounds of Ludwig van Beethoven and Igor Stravinsky, two colossal composers whose transformative compositions shaped the future of classical music.
Our centennial year was a momentous milestone for the BSO. I invite you to join us as we continue our treasured legacy into a second century of outstanding symphonic music.
