Baltimore City College Concert Choir
For its 177 years , Baltimore City College , known as the “ castle on the hill ,” has had a strong music program . Starting many years ago with a male glee club , the choral legacy has grown , and is now considered one of the finest high school ensembles in the region .
The approximately 70 students in the Baltimore City College High School choral program perform music ranging from classics by Handel and Praetorius to the spirituals and American Songbook works by Dawson , Hogan , Gibbs , Ellington and Smallwood . The full / mixed chorus also supports several smaller ensembles , including the Concert Choir , an auditioned group of about 50 students that serves as the main performing group ; The Singin ’/ Swingin ’ Knights Ensemble , 25 students who perform pieces from the Renaissance to the present ; the Knights and Daze Show Choir , who perform jazz , pop , and show tunes with choreography ; and the Male Glee Club .
As students at a challenging preparatory school , choir members balance a rigorous schedule designed to develop their academic and music skills .
From 1987 – 2013 , the Baltimore City College Choir was under the direction of Linda R . Hall . Under her leadership , the choir performed at the White House , Carnegie Hall , and internationally , in France , Italy and Spain .
In July 2013 , upon Ms . Hall ’ s retirement , Marcus D . Smith , a City College alumnus and former assistant choral director , became director of the choir .
