As associate conductor, Mr. Hersh also serves as artistic director of the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras and leads the BSO’ s educational and family programming, including the celebrated BSO Academy for adult amateur musicians. Mr. Hersh conducts the BSO in a set of subscription concerts each season. He has also appeared in concert with such orchestras as the New World Symphony, the National Repertory Orchestra and the Southern Great Lakes Symphony.
Mr. Hersh grew up in Evanston, Illinois and started his musical training with the cello. He earned a bachelor’ s degree in Music from Stanford University and a master’ s degree in Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. In 2011 and 2012, he was a conducting fellow with the prestigious American Academy of Conducting at Aspen. Nicholas is a two-time recipient of the Solti Foundation Career Assistance Award, which recognizes talented young American conductors early in their professional careers. He joined the BSO in 2014 as assistant conductor.
Mr. Hersh’ s performance credits span a diverse range of genres including opera, Broadway, pops, choral, ballet and film music. He has conducted numerous world premieres and champions living composers in his programming. In addition to composing the Indie / orchestra crossover collaborations for the BSO Pulse series, Mr. Hersh’ s orchestral arrangements have appeared on professional symphony programs across the U. S.— notably his arrangement of Queen’ s famous“ Bohemian Rhapsody”, which saw worldwide success after the video of its premiere and subsequent studio recording went viral on the Internet.
