The Baltimore themed first half opens with a 1952 overture by locally born Alan Shulman, conducted by Peabody alum Joseph Young. Piano giant Leon Fleisher performs one of his iconic pieces, the Piano Concerto for Left Hand by Prokofiev. On Friday and Saturday, an Off the Cuff concert explores Rachmaninoff’s Russian heritage and his connection to his homeland. (These programs do not include Leon Fleisher.) In his welcome return, he is joined by the electrifying Armenian, Sergey Khachatryan, in Sibelius’s intense and thrilling violin concerto. Brahms’ Fourth Symphony represents the capstone of the composer’s symphonic achievement, a profound expression of the complexity of the human spirit.
