Welcome
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the start of another exciting Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra season, our 99th in fact!
Leading in her eighth year as Music Director, Marin Alsop has curated a fascinating season
that explores themes of spirituality and transcendence across eight different programs. Issues of
faith, beliefs and values have inspired some of the most awe-inspiring, uplifting music over the
ages — from Mozart’s late 18th century “Great” Mass
Issues of faith,
and the early 19th century humanism of Beethoven to
beliefs and values Mahler’s great symphonic outpourings and Bernstein’s
have inspired
own music wrestling with “the 20th century’s crisis of
faith”,
as well as new perspectives from contemporary

Joining the orchestra are Principal Trombone
Aaron LaVere who comes from the Oregon Symphony,
and Assistant Principal Oboe Melissa Hooper from Texas. And, on the conducting staff,
Marin Alsop and the BSO have announced four new appointments, most
notably the acclaimed German conductor Markus Stenz as the BSO’s principal guest conductor beginning in the 2015–2016 season (in the words of the
Baltimore Sun’s Tim Smith, “If you heard his 2012 debut, you’ll know why.”).
