Welcome
As we approach the end of this year, it is worth reflecting on the successes of 2014. From educational initiatives to captivating performances here at the Hall, the BSO has so much to celebrate.
This time last year, we were celebrating OrchKids, a program acknowledged by the
President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. On November 22, 2013, in the East
Room of the White House, First Lady Michelle Obama presented OrchKids Artistic Director
Dan Trahey and participant Asia Palmer with a National Arts and Humanities Youth
Program Award, recognizing OrchKids for its effectiveness in developing learning and life
skills in young people. OrchKids now reaches more

new energy to the hall as 113 participants from across
the country met, rehearsed and performed side-byside with Orchestra members and Maestra Marin Alsop. Additionally, July 2014 saw the firstever BSO Music Educators Academy, an all-new program specifically designed
for aspiring and experienced music educators. You can read more about these
programs, and their impact on participants, on page 10.
Performance-wise, you can rest assured that the BSO’s concerts are
stronger than ever. As noted by Baltimore Sun classical music critic Tim
Smith, “An extra spark in the playing at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s first program of the 2014 –2015 subscription series … made me think
this would turn out to be an exceptional season … I know you are tired
of hearing me say this, but I just want to make sure it’s sinking
in—the BSO is operating at a technical peak these days and
demonstrating a tighter rapport than ever with Music Director Marin Alsop.”
Of course, none of this would be possible without your
patronage and generous financial support. On behalf of
Marin Alsop and the musicians of the BSO, we are very
appreciative of all that you do.
