This year is no exception. On November 14 and 15, our Maestra leads massed orchestral and choral forces in rare performances of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, composed to mark the building of the new Coventry Cathedral in 1962 after the magnificent medieval cathedral I would like to express my gratitude was destroyed in WWII. The work’s message of re-birth after the destruction of war remains ever to our wonderful potent today. The BSO is hosting community musicians of the and education activities to give deeper insight Baltimore Symphony about this moving work. Orchestra. Later in November, we hear whether our celebrated OrchKids™ after-school program will be a winner in the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Awards. This award recognizes and supports excellence in programs that open new pathways to learning, self-discovery and achievement. If OrchKids is selected, the program receives a $10,000 grant, as well as the opportunity to send participants to the White House to meet First Lady Michelle Obama. And on December 20 –22, I invite you to join us for a unique collaboration between the BSO and the Baltimore School for the Arts on the stage of the Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric for four fullystaged performances of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker ballet. Finally, at this time of thanksgiving, I would like to express my gratitude to our wonderful musicians of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. They have agreed to make many sacrifices over the last few years in order to preserve the quality and sustainability of our concert series during difficult financial times. I am happy that we have been able to sign a new three-year contract with the orchestra in a collaborative spirit. It enables us to make deserved increases in pay that will better ensure we can retain and attract the best possible players.
