Vernon Square. His love of music was inherited from his mother, a pianist, who studied music at Peabody while attending the Maryland College for Women. She strongly encouraged Haswell to take lessons in piano, drum, voice, tap dancing and even ballet. Although he preferred to be outside playing ball, his mother assured him that someday he would appreciate music, and, Haswell noted, “She was right!” Haswell sang in the Gilman School octet and Glee Club, and continued in college at Washington & Lee. Soon he was exposed to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and immediately enjoyed it. Madge Franklin grew up in Carroll County near Union Mills, and studied piano through high school and sang in the chorus. Also enjoying music, Madge has found that one of the great pleasures in life is attending the symphony. Early in their marriage, they began attending Baltimore Symphony concerts at the Lyric, and have been attending ever since. Haswell is now Chairman Emeritus of Franklin Financial Group, with his four sons involved in the family business. Now with eight children and 21 grandchildren, Haswell and Madge feel blessed with an outstanding orchestra, and they believe it is important to provide for the future of the BSO through their estate, helping to assure that future generations will have the same opportunities. 100 Announcing the Centennial Challenge! The BSO will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2016.
