Welcome
A very Happy New Year to you from everyone at the BSO! Through uplifting performances
from our wonderful musicians and guest artists, we look forward to bringing you much joy and
comfort in 2014.
2013 closed with a succession of successful events for the BSO. In November Marin Alsop
led deeply moving performances of Benjamin Britten’s poignant War Requiem. That was soon
followed by the BSO’s first-ever performance
I’m particularly
at M&T Bank Stadium for a Ravens-Steelers
game audience of over 71,000 and, fleetingly,
looking forward to
the BSO’s performance a nationally-televised audience of 30 million.
On a chilly Thanksgiving night, Marin Alsop
of Mendelssohn’s A
and 32 BSO musicians were joined by a
Midsummer Night’s
group of student musicians from OrchKids,
Dream (May 29 –June 1) which was earlier presented with a generous
$15,000 donation from the Ravens. November was a busy month for the OrchKids, as
they received one of twelve 2013 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program
Awards, presented by the First Lady Michelle Obama.
That was 2013. But the year 2014 promises quite a few highlights of
its own! In January, we celebrate Marvin Hamlisch, former principal pops
conductor of the BSO. He was a man and musician whose life and music
made a profound impact on this Orchestra and our community, so this
tribute program will have special significance for us all.
