Suppose that tonight only, NBC is airing "Cinderella" live. You've grown up with it, watched it weekly and heard Julie Andrews belt out her infamous songs. What a wonderful idea for the general public to be educated on musical theater.

But here's the modern twist-- the role of Cinderella will be played by Miley Cyrus.

Shocking? Yes, but far from reality? Not necessarily.

A trend has emerged on television and in movie theaters: the transformations of musicals into their film adaptations. Producers seem to favor celebrities without theater training to fill in roles made famous by the original stars.

NBC premiered "The Sound Of Music" last winter with Carrie Underwood as Maria, made famous by Julie Andrews. Underwood had no acting experience prior and couldn't hide her country twang, outraging Broadway fans.
