DAY 5 • Hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu We’ ll hike along the legendary Inca Trail, part of the vast stone road network that once connected the Inca Empire. We follow the final 7.7 miles to Inti Punku, the Sun Gate of Machu Picchu, trekking on the old stone road through cloud forest and dramatic Andean mountain scenery. Expect a challenging but rewarding hike as we ascend 2,000 feet uphill during the first half of our hike. Assisted by our Trip Experience Leader and local guides, we’ ll pass Inca sites like the water temple of Chachabamba and the stone terraces of Wiñay Wayna before climbing steep stone steps to the Sun Gate for our first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu. DAY 3 • Fly to Cuzco • Weaving demonstration • Pisac • Sacred Valley Fly to Cuzco today, enjoying sweeping views of the Andean landscape en route. Upon arrival, continue into the Sacred Valley, home to many of the Incas’ most cherished sites. Visit the mountain village of Huayllarcocha, where local women create handwoven textiles using natural dyes from plants and insects, and learn about their techniques during a hands-on demonstration. Then travel by switchback road to the ancient Inca city of Pisac, perched high above the Urubamba Valley amid graceful agricultural terraces. Explore stone dwellings and temples on a short walk through the ruins.

DAY 4 • A Day in the Life of Urubamba • Home-Hosted Lunch • Moray Early risers may enjoy a sunrise walk in the Sacred Valley before spending A Day in the Life of Urubamba. Visit the town market to shop for ingredients using local currency, then ride moto-taxis to a traditional chicheria to meet locals and try a taste of chicha, a fermented corn drink popular in the region. DAY 6 • Machu Picchu • Transfer to Cuzco Drive the winding switchback road to Machu Picchu this morning for a half-day guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Learn how the Inca achieved extraordinary engineering feats, fitting massive stones together without mortar so precisely that they withstand earthquakes. As your Trip Experience Leader provides historical context, explore the mysteries of the“ Lost City” and its role in the Inca world. Afterward, return to Aguas Calientes for time to rest before traveling by train and bus through the Sacred Valley to Cuzco.

DAY 7 • Sacsayhuaman archaeological site • Cuzco We begin with a drive into the hills above Cuzco to explore Sacsayhuaman, an Inca archaeological site built from massive stones— some weighing nearly 300 tons.
